Quilt size chart with fabric requirements
Backing figures use the longarm standard of 4" overhang per side; binding uses 2 1/2" strips. Every number below comes from the same verified formulas as our calculators, so the chart and the tools always agree.

How to choose a quilt size
Two questions settle it. Is the quilt for a bed or a person? Bed quilts follow the mattress plus drop math (the quilt size calculator handles any bed, drop, and pillow tuck combination). Person quilts (baby, lap, throw) follow the body and the furniture, and the chart sizes above are conventions, not commandments.
The second question: who is doing the quilting? Everything through the throw stays pleasant on a home machine; from twin upward, most quilters send the work to a longarmer, and every backing and batting figure on this site assumes the 4" overhang longarmers require. Quilting it yourself with less overhang? Each size page's embedded calculator adjusts in one tap.
The two traps in every size chart
First, batting packages are named for mattresses, not quilts: once overhang is counted, a twin quilt needs queen batting and a queen needs king. The chart above already accounts for this; the package column tells you what to actually buy. Second, dimensions are conventions that vary a few inches between pattern publishers, and that is fine; a quilt 3" off chart fits the bed identically. When precision matters, measure the actual mattress and use the calculators.
